General

What is the approach process like?

When planning your trip, please note that our boarding process closes 10 minutes before departure time. Please remember to be at the terminal one hour earlier.

Can I travel with my service animal?

Puerto Rico Ferry welcomes guide dogs or service animals on our premises. All service animals must wear appropriate service attire and documentation must be provided to support that the animal is a service animal. For island service tickets: use the "additional" option to add a free ticket for your service animal to your order.

Do you have any missing items?

To report items left on board, contact [email protected] or visit a Puerto Rico Ferry ticket office. For the safety of all passengers and crew, do not leave any personal items unattended while on board or in berths.

Do you need a negative COVID test before traveling?

Proof of negative COVID is not required for travel on Puerto Rico Ferry. For more information on COVID travel policies in Puerto Rico, please visit this link.

Tickets

What is the ticket transfer and refund policy?

  • All ticket transfers must be made at least one (1) hour prior to the scheduled departure time.
  • Tickets may only be transferred two (2) times.
  • Tickets that are not transferred in accordance with the new transfer policy will not be refunded.
  • Arrival of passengers: 1 hour before departure.
  • The boarding process closes 10 minutes before departure.

Do I have to pay for hand-carried items?

Yes, for Island Service (travelling between Ceiba, Vieques and Culebra), each carry-on item requires a ticket. This can be added during the ticket purchase process. Please check the list and price of carry-on items.

For which ferry routes does puertoricoferry.com currently sell tickets?

Puerto Rico Ferry currently sells tickets for the following routes:

  • San Juan <> Cataño
  • Ceiba <> Vieques
  • Ceiba <> Culebra

Where can I buy tickets?

You can buy tickets:

  • online at puertoricoferry.com
  • through the City Experiences mobile application
  • in person at ferry terminals

Is it necessary to buy a ticket in advance?

Advance purchase of tickets is not necessary.

How far in advance can I buy a ticket?

Advance sales are limited. Agents can only sell tickets for schedules that have been published on Puertoricoferry.com and the APP.

 

RESIDENTS

Currently, residents can purchase advance tickets on the website, the APP and the ticket window. Advance ticket sales are limited to published scheduled departures. Proof of residency is required when purchasing tickets.

 

NON-RESIDENTS

Advance ticket sales for non-residents are limited to the website and APP. A limited number of tickets will be reserved for advance purchase via the website and app prior to a scheduled departure. Non-residents will be able to purchase tickets on the day of departure at the ticket window. It is recommended that passengers arrive at least one hour prior to scheduled departure. Available capacities can be found at puertoricoferry.com.

How many tickets can I buy in one transaction?

A passenger may purchase up to (5) tickets in a single transaction.

If there is no ticket inventory on puertoricoferry.com, what do I do?

Depending on available capacity, passengers have the option to purchase tickets at the ticket window. Additional tickets are reserved and released for purchase on the day of scheduled departure.

How do I receive my tickets if I buy online?

If the ticket is purchased online, passengers have the option to receive their tickets by email or text message. Passengers are encouraged to share accurate contact information, such as mobile phone number or email, to receive their tickets.

I have not received my tickets, what should I do?

You can contact us at [email protected] for assistance.

If I don't use the ticket on the assigned day, can I use it on another day?

Up to one (1) hour prior to a ticket’s scheduled departure, passengers have the option to transfer a booking to another departure, either on the same day or on a future date, depending on availability. Passengers must provide a valid confirmation number that has not been previously used to rebook.

What steps should I take if I have lost my ticket?

If a passenger loses a ticket, they can provide the confirmation number they received by email or text message and an agent will be able to reprint their ticket from the counter. Passengers can also email [email protected] for assistance.

What is the ticket refund policy?

All final sales. Refunds are not accepted. Passengers have the option to transfer an unused ticket to another departure.

If I buy tickets for several people travelling with me, can I resend the tickets to them?

You can access your tickets online at puertoricoferry.com. Our booking management option allows you to share tickets and itineraries with friends and family via a link, text message or email.

What happens if my trip is cancelled?

Passengers have the option to reschedule their purchased trip to a later time, depending on capacity availability. Passengers are encouraged to share accurate contact information when purchasing a ticket, such as mobile phone number or email, in order to receive automatic service updates to their preferred method of contact.

 

Refunds will be made if trips are cancelled due to unforeseen circumstances, e.g. force majeure.

I bought tickets for Culebra/Vieques but there were no return tickets available, can I buy them the same day in Culebra/Vieques?

Passengers are strongly encouraged to purchase tickets in advance. Depending on available capacity, passengers have the option to purchase tickets at the ticket office. Additional tickets are reserved and released for purchase on the day of scheduled departure.

What time does the box office open/close?

Each terminal opens one hour before the first scheduled departure and closes with the departure of the last ship.

Boarding

Are there priority boarding passengers?

Priority order for passenger boarding:
a. Pregnant women, senior citizens (60 years of age or older); persons with disabilities and veterans.
b. Bona fide residents of the municipality's islands.
c. Passengers with tickets purchased at www.puertoricoferry.com
d. Passengers with tickets purchased at the terminal counter.

Valid identification must be presented at the time of boarding to claim priority boarding.

Can children travel alone?

Children under 18 cannot travel alone and must be accompanied by an adult at all times.

When I arrive at the port, what steps do I have to take to embark?

It is suggested that passengers arrive no later than one hour before the scheduled departure time. If you are boarding with your cargo, please check with the agent at the ticket counter for further instructions. All passengers must have and present valid tickets for the assigned departure date and time to the boarding agent prior to boarding.

Can I bring my bike onboard?

Yes, bicycle tickets are available for purchase online through the app, the website and the three terminals located in Vieques, Ceiba and Culebra. Select 'bicycle' under Additional Options - Items' during the checkout process.

Cargo

Can I exchange my Cargo ticket?

  • Cargo tickets will be exchangeable for another trip for only 48 hours after the original trip departs.
  • If the exchange does not take place during the timeframe no exchange will take place.
  • Refunds will not be provided for any reason.

Can I buy a ticket for my rental car?

You may not purchase a vehicle ticket for a rental car. You must show a valid driver's license and car registration to purchase vehicle tickets. *This is for residents only.

Can I buy a cargo ticket online?

Passengers wishing to purchase a ticket for a vehicle must do so in person at the ticket window. A valid vehicle registration, driver's license and license plate number are required to purchase a ticket.

Culebra Resident Registry FAQ

What is the Puerto Rico Ferry Resident Registry?

The Puerto Rico Ferry Resident Registry allows verified residents of Culebra to register in advance to purchase discounted resident fare tickets when traveling aboard the Puerto Rico Ferry. Completing your registration for the Puerto Rico Ferry Resident Registry will ensure a smooth ticket purchase and boarding experience for residents while ensuring that they do not pay the additional fares applicable to non-residents.

Eligible passengers must be pre-registered by the Municipality of Culebra in order to register in the Puerto Rico Ferry Resident Registry. Once approved by the Municipality of Culebra, residents will receive a certificate of proof, which must be presented to Puerto Rico Ferry when applying to join the Puerto Rico Ferry Resident Registry.

Unregistered residents will not be permitted to purchase discounted tickets if they are not approved by the Puerto Rico Ferry Resident Registry prior to purchase. Presenting identification will not be sufficient to purchase discounted fare tickets unless the purchasing passenger is approved and registered as a resident with the Puerto Rico Ferry Resident Registry prior to the time of purchase.

What is the difference between the Puerto Rico Ferry registration and the Culebra Municipality Resident Certification?

The Puerto Rico Ferry Resident Registry is separate from the Culebra Municipality Resident Certification. Eligible passengers must be pre-registered by the Municipality of Culebra to register in the Puerto Rico Ferry Resident Registry. Once approved by the Municipality of Culebra, residents will receive a certificate of proof, which must be presented when applying to join the Puerto Rico Ferry Resident Registry.

What documents are needed to complete the registration?

Eligible passengers must be pre-registered by the Municipality of Culebra to register for the discounted resident fare program. Once approved by the Municipality of Culebra, residents will receive a certificate of proof, which must be presented to Puerto Rico Ferry when applying to join the Puerto Rico Ferry Resident Registry. Once a person receives their certificate of residency, Culebra residents must apply through puertoricoferry.com or in person at the Puerto Rico Ferry ticket office and be approved as a resident passenger before purchasing discounted resident fare tickets. Applicants must present both their Culebra resident certificate provided by the municipality and proof of identification.

Examples of valid identification include:

  • Government-issued ID (e.g., PR ID, driver's license from any state, U.S. military ID)

Where can I register?

Once an eligible resident is pre-registered by the Municipality of Culebra and receives his or her certificate of residency, he or she may register in the Puerto Rico Ferry Resident Registry at puertoricoferry.com or in person at a Puerto Rico Ferry ticket office.

Applicants who present the documentation in person must present both their Culebra resident certificate provided by the municipality and proof of identification.

Culebra residents are encouraged to register as soon as possible to ensure they receive the discounted resident rate when purchasing their tickets.

Once approved, do I have to show proof of identification each time I purchase a ticket?

  • Yes. Approved eligible passengers must show valid proof of identification when purchasing tickets in person and prior to boarding. After registration and approval to purchase discounted resident tickets, approved Culebra residents may purchase their discounted fare tickets online, through the City Experiences app or in person at the ticket office.Examples of valid ID include:

How can I purchase resident tickets for my children?

Parents and/or guardians may only register those minors for whom they have previously registered as resident minors with the Municipality of Culebra.

By registering as a resident of Culebra, the custodial parent or legal guardian of any person under the age of twenty-one (21) who is not emancipated and is a resident of Culebra, may register their children as residents within the Puerto Rico Ferry Resident Registry, thus allowing the parents to purchase resident fare tickets for such children.

When does the resident fare structure go into effect?

Discounted resident rates will go into effect on December 1, 2023. All purchases made on or after January 2, 2024 will be subject to all applicable fees and taxes.

Once I submit my documents, how long will it take to complete the registration process?

Approval may take up to 14 days. Residents are encouraged to apply for the Puerto Rico Ferry Resident Registration in advance to ensure they receive the correct discounted fare ticket for their scheduled departures.

In which office of the Municipality of Culebra can I register?

For complete details on the registration of residents of the Municipality of Culebra, contact the offices of Citizen Affairs of the Municipality.

If I do not register but I have my proof of residency, can I purchase a discounted resident fare ticket?

No. Presenting identification will not be sufficient to purchase discounted fare tickets unless the purchasing passenger is approved and registered as a resident of Puerto Rico Ferry prior to the time of purchase.

While my registration application is being processed, how can I purchase resident tickets without paying additional fees/taxes?

Eligible passengers must be pre-registered by the Municipality of Culebra and registered in the Puerto Rico Ferry Resident Registry to purchase a discounted resident fare ticket.

Once I complete my registration process, how will it work when I purchase my tickets?

Once eligible passengers are approved for the Puerto Rico Ferry Resident Registry, they will be notified via the preferred method of contact they selected when applying. Once approved, eligible passengers must show valid proof of identification when purchasing tickets in person and before boarding. All other Puerto Rico Ferry policies remain in effect for all passengers.

What if my ID does not match my resident registration information?

If the identification provided at the time of purchase or during boarding does not match the resident record approved by Puerto Rico Ferry, the passenger will be charged a regular non-resident fare.

How many tickets can I buy with my resident registration?

Approved residents may purchase one (1) discounted adult resident ticket for themselves and the discounted resident minor/child ticket(s) for minors/children registered under their household for use on the same departure as the adult purchaser. Eligible and approved residents may not purchase reduced fare tickets for other adult passengers or other persons not registered on the same resident account. Tickets must be purchased for all parties prior to boarding.

Can I transfer my resident ticket to another passenger?

No. Discounted resident fare tickets are for the exclusive use of the designated resident for whom the ticket was originally purchased and cannot be transferred to any other passenger.

Are resident tickets round trip?

Residents may purchase a one-way or round-trip ticket at the discounted resident rate.

Can I purchase a discounted resident fare ticket for travel to Vieques or on Metro service?

No. The purchase of resident tickets at a discounted rate is only available to eligible Culebra groups traveling on the island service for departures between Ceiba and Culebra.

Do I need to register as a resident every year?

Your registration with Puerto Rico Ferry is valid as long as you continue your registration with the Municipality of Culebra.

Do I need to re-register if I move to a new address?

The information on the proof of identification presented at the time of purchase and during boarding must match the information indicated for Puerto Rico Ferry resident registration. Residents are encouraged to update their registration as soon as possible to ensure they receive the discounted resident fare.

Is there a separate onboarding process for registered residents?

No. All passengers are subject to the same boarding, transfer, loading and travel policies.

Does the non-resident fare apply to all non-resident passengers, including those who were previously free of charge?

All non-resident passengers on the Culebra route are subject to all applicable non-resident taxes and fees imposed by the Municipality of Culebra.

Why is the discounted resident rate only available to Culebra residents?

The Puerto Rico Ferry Resident Registry is a pilot program launched to comply with the "Regulations of the Permanent Fund for Environmental Preservation" that requires the collection of a tax from any person who is not exempt under Article 5.1 and who has not completed the due process of the Resident Registry of the Island Municipality of Culebra.

Where do the funds from the non-resident municipal tax go?

The collection of the non-resident fee for travel to Culebra is required by the Culebra Environmental Tax. All non-resident fares collected under this tax will be distributed to the Municipality of Culebra. Funds collected under this tax are not used or paid to HMS Ferries - Puerto Rico.
